Anchorage – Alaska

Gaye’s first bear encounter

12th May 2016

Arrived in Anchorage with bikes, BOBs & bodies largely unscathed. Alaskans sure are friendly – we hadn’t even got past Honolulu Airport before we got chatting to an Alaskan native who was quick to advise that Alaska kills more tourists than any other US state(!) He gave us a comprehensive rundown on the ways that we were likely to meet our demise … bear attack, bad tempered moose, toxic flesh eating plants, drunken drivers etc etc. Luckily the first bear we met was very benign (see photo). But just in case, we have loaded up with a bear horn (scare bear away if undeterred by my singing), bear spray (if bear is close enough for this to be effective you’re probably dead of fright anyway), and bear- proof food storage bags (to avoid having to fight bear for possession of precious food supplies).

After a few days checking out the town and preparing our gear we expect to head off on Monday, via Glennallen and into the Wrangell-St Elias National Park …
