Neuquen to San Martin de Los Andes

Argentina

Chapter 4

The Dinosaur Museum at Plaza Huincal 100k east of Neuquen

After leaving Neuquen we were done with the worst of the traffic and started to climb into the foothills of the Andes. As we approached a large oil field we had to put up with some huge trucks.

We visited the Dinosaur Museum at Plaza Huincal which had reconstructions of dinosaurs found in the area. Evidently some of the largest dinosaurs found in the world plus a range of other smaller species.

Heading out from Zapala we started to climb. And climb some more. It was overcast so we didn´t get a scenic reward until the following day when we woke at Laguna Blanca National Park to find the lake backed by a spectacular mountain range.

The scenery the next day provided plenty of distraction from the aching legs on the climbs. Bush camping was easy alongside the Rio Alumine – a fishing mecca

Another couple of days brought us in to the tourist town of San Martin de los Andes for a break and a chance to do some forward planning for the next couple of weeks. It looks like we will be assisting with some forest field work near Bariloche for a week before crossing into Chile for a week or so.
